Alternative Medicine – Avenue for Medical Tourism

The history of alternative medicine is a rather interesting one, and has its
origins in traditional methods of medicine. Alternative medicine has been
in existence since time immemorial. Being a primeval science, this medicinal
system has been known to man since the early days of his time on Earth. Using
natural ingredients to prevent and cure most illnesses has perhaps been man’s greatest foray into medical science. Traditional medical practitioners aimed at prevention of diseases associated with an increase in resistance of the human body. As an expert rightly pointed out, “The study of the history of alternative medicine is fascinating on a variety of levels, not just concerning other and often better ways of preserving and restoring health.”

Practised for thousands of years, alternative medicine includes systems like
Acupuncture, Ayurveda and traditional Asian medicine. Alternative medicine branches
out from the Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) treatments and
therapies. CAM is often combined with formal, conventional medicine, integrating
both medical practices, in order to give the best results to patients. It can be said that
the earlier methods of medicine were attempted at achieving a balance between bodily
and natural energy. Energies were sought as positive and negative energies, where

Criteria for Evaluating Nutritional Supplements and the Need to Evaluate

A Paradox of Choice Highlights The Need To Evaluate

If you already take nutritional supplements or are considering starting then you’re no doubt well aware of the seemingly endless array of products and choices in the market.

Supplement consumers face a paradox of choice and they know only too well that the quality, safety and efficacy of the thousands of various brands out there are far from equal!

Physicians Management Journal backs this up by reporting that one in three dollars spent on nutritional supplements is WASTED!

Because nutritional supplements in the US are currently regulated under ‘food GMP’ (and these do not address the unique aspects of supplement manufacturing) the market has become flooded with supplements lacking product integrity and making fanciful performance claims.

Supermarket shelves and on-line stores are filled with supplements put together by marketers or other unqualified people trying to cash in on the popularity of the latest ‘in-vogue’ nutrients and on consumers lack of nutritional science knowledge.

The majority of people putting together supplements for sale have little idea of the complex bio-chemistry involved when ingredients are combined or which metabolic pathways they follow when assimilated into (more…)

The Definition of Alternative Medicine

Have you ever suffered from a horrible headache when you thought the best remedy might be for someone to bash you over the head, or to pull your hair out? Then you might have some experience with alternative medicine!

In all seriousness, alternative medicine is not about hurting yourself, but involves investigating other potential methods to treat an ailment besides synthetic drugs. A good purpose for alternative medicine is to avoid developing a dependence on drugs of any type, which can supersede any medicinal or curing effects they might have. Searching for different ways of dealing with your physical or emotional issues or conditions can end up being better for you in the long run.

A great deal of alternative medicine treatments come from ancient medicinal knowledge and insight. Many different types of remedies used by different cultures through the years, including the use of needles for pain relief, herbs for medicinal treatments, or even massage therapy, are considered a form of medicine by the respective users because they work to some degree. However, many alternative treatments are unknown to the general public, as they are not in conformity with the mass marketed treatments and pharmaceuticals.

The purpose of World Health Day

The purpose of World Health Day is to urge governments, organizations and businesses to share the responsibility for and invest in international health security. On April 7, 2007, various countries are hosting events based on the World Health Day theme, “Invest in health, build a safer future”, which emphasizes the need for collective defenses and shared responsibility for international health security.

To present effective, globally coherent messages, World Health Day activities are purposed around these key messages:

- Threats to health know no borders. Emerging epidemics cross national borders. Threats to health and security are multiplying and moving faster than ever before.

- Invest in health, build a safer future. Every country must invest in health and increase its capacity to prevent threats by strengthening public health systems.

- Health leads to security; insecurity leads to poor health. Protecting health and security requires political commitment and collaboration between governments, international organizations, civil society and the private sector.

- Preparedness and quick response improve international health security. Threats to health security come from emerging diseases like SARS and avian influenza, humanitarian emergencies, and bioterrorism. Defeating these threats involves working collectively to improve preparedness and to respond effectively.

- The World Health Organization (WHO) is making the (more…)

Finding Good Nutrition Advice

There is certainly a huge amount of information in circulation these days; on the web, in magazines, on the television. Trying to separate out fact from fiction can be quite the daunting task. Let me just give you a few pointers to help you at least figure out who can legitimately call themselves an expert on nutrition information, which may help you decide which articles you can trust.

First of all, you should know that ANYONE could call himself or herself a nutritionist. There are no laws or guidelines determining who can give out nutrition advice. I will never forget when I was visiting my parents one weekend while going to graduate school. While at the swimming pool at our local Jewish Community Center, a friend of theirs wanted to know what I was studying at college. “Nutrition science” I replied. And I?ll never forget what this woman said: ?oh, my daughter has read so many books on nutrition that I?m sure she can call herself a nutritionist just like you.? I was astounded! Surely my parents would have loved finding out all their hard earned oney on my college education could have been spent (more…)

Alternative Medicine for Mental Wellbeing

Some recent healthcare studies* suggest that alternative medicine is growing in popularity. One of the many reasons for this increase is due in part to the fact that most alternative medicine therapies are often non-invasive, with little or no side effects.

For example, herbal medicine like St. John’s wort was scientifically studied* in Europe, presenting positive findings for its effectiveness on the treatment of certain cases of depression. However, large pharmaceutical company, Pfizer Inc., refuted these studies by carrying out an independent study on the herb. The difference, though, between this alternative medicine in comparison to drugs like Prozac, is the potentially lethal side effects; which have made recent headlines in anti-depressant/anti-anxiety drug lawsuits.

Complementary and alternative medicine like acupuncture is also making leeway in the field of mental healthcare. In a small pilot study* carried out by researchers, acupuncture was used as a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy on patients suffering from PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). Interestingly enough, research found that acupuncture may be effective in helping people, who have PTSD.

Another form of alternative medicine, believe it or not, is meditation. Studies* found that individuals who practice meditation are (more…)
