Assessing commercial diets

Recently, I gave up dieting. I’ve tried many things and lost a lot of weight on different diets and gained it all back. The minute you aren’t “on the diet” any longer, that’s where the problem is. I can’t keep the weight off without starving myself and that is just miserable. Most of these reviews will be based on a person who needs to lose 75 or more pounds, not the typical 10 or 20 that I hear most people complaining about. Additionally, men in general tend to have a higher metabolism than women and will lose weight quicker. So, this is written from a woman’s perspective. Here are some of the diets I’ve done and what I think of them:

Herbalife: Wouldn’t recommend this to anyone. It’s costly and in the end I don’t think it was good for my health or my heart. If you do some research on the founder of this company, you will see that many of the products really can not do what they claim. They were sued some years back because of this and had to change the way they labeled their products.

To diet, or not to diet?

Diet has rapidly become an often misunderstood word. When many people hear the word “diet,” they think of quick weight-loss solutions such as the Atkins diet, Mediterranean diet, the South Beach diet, and many others. The Oxford English dictionary has a few good definitions that take us back to the better meaning of the word: “Food; the provisions or victuals in daily use, viewed as a collective whole, especially in relation to their quality and effects” or “Course of life: way of living or thinking” (diet used as a noun) and “To take one’s ordinary food, or meals; to feed (on)” (diet used as a verb).

With these definitions in mind, we can answer the question, “To diet, or not to diet?” It’s quite simple, actually. Choose to diet, but choose a diet which will become a lifestyle, a life change, or “a diet for life.” This is perhaps the easiest diet I can think of, with the best and most healthful results, because there is no need for deprivation and no need to count calories.

When I confront people with the words “moderation,” “exercise,” “weight loss,” and “no deprivation” all in one sentence, they give me a shocked look. (more…)

Does the Atkins Diet really work?

There are many misconceptions that exist about the Atkins Diet. Many Americans believe that the Atkins Diet is basially an all-you-can-eat buffet of sausage, hamburgers, steaks, meatballs, eggs, and cheeses. As a result, people are truly completely misunderstanding the diet in and of itself. The Atkins diet begins with an introduction phase, as explained in the Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution book and video. During this two week introduction period, the individual dieter is supposed to primarily eat meat, eggs, fish, and fowl. Vegetables, fruits, carbohodrates, and sugars are to be kept to a minimum and the goal of each day is to essentially consume less than twenty carbs. It is after this initial two week introduction period, that carbohydrates may be reintroduced back into the diet gradually, but they are still supposed to be kept in low increments. Sugars are still to be avoided, and carbohydrates should essentially be coming from vegetables such as spinach, lettuce, broccoli, onions, carrots, and other lower carbohydrate containing veggie sources.
